Research Assistant: Development of Next Generation Fibre-Reinforced Biocomposites
Institute for Materials Research & Innovation, School of Engineering, University of Greater Manchester, Bolton
Fixed Term – 12 Months
Salary £22690 per annum
*Closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 29 August 2025.
Interviews are expected to take place within two weeks of the closing date.
Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to deliver a collaboration project between the University of Greater Manchester "Fire Materials Research Team” and Carr Reinforcements, Burnley, UK. Carr Reinforcements are an independent weaver of high performance fabrics for use in the aerospace, automotive, equestrian, motorcycle, defence, marine and industrial markets involving usage of many more composite materials.
This project aims to develop and test flexible and rigid composite structures with improved mechanical and fire properties. This involves developing novel surface treatments for reinforcing fibres and/or resin.
This exciting 12-month is your opportunity to join the Fire Materials Research Team and gain experience in composite fabrication, surface treatment of textiles, resin modification and fire materials science. The Fire Materials Research Team has a strong national and international reputation, and is supported by access to state-of-the-art infrastructure including materials processing and flammability testing facilities, materials characterisation, textiles and composites laboratories.
The role will suit a candidate with a strong academic background, experience of working independently in the lab and an interest in discovering the fundamental science behind observed properties. The major challenge will be translating this understanding to develop novel fibre-reinforced composites.
Prospective candidates can contact Professor Baljinder Kandola (Tel: +44(0)1204903517, email: b.kandola@bolton.ac.uk) for an informal discussion relating to this opportunity.
